Michael Baird Golf Classic 2019

Posted Apr 15th 2019 in

The 2019 Michael Baird Golf Classic in support of The Clarington Central Lunch Buddy Program will take place on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at Wolf Run Golf Club. We want to reach out and explain the program we are raising money for and why it is so important to us.

WHAT IS CLARINGTON CENTRAL’S LUNCH BUDDY PROGRAM?

The Lunch Buddy Program matches caring student volunteers with individuals with special needs from Learning & Life Skills (LLS) classes. Lunch Buddy ‘matches’ get together and share their lunch hour together. Lunch Buddies also

  • Provide peer mentoring and positive role modeling within the school
  • Open the doors of friendship to students with limited social contacts
  • Demonstrate the qualities of good citizenship to all students
  • Promote an inclusive school spirit

The programme’s impact on the lives of special needs students is remarkable. Students have the opportunity to develop friendships where none existed before. They are empowered and have a greater sense of acceptance within the school community.

LUNCH BUDDY FUNDING AND ACTIVITIES

All funding supporting Lunch Buddies comes from charitable donations. 100% of donated money goes straight into the program to help students involved with the lunch buddy program. These donations allow Bruce the opportunity to bring about more enjoyable activities for the students. Some events that take place yearly; Bowling, Theatre, Concert, Christmas party, Pizza party, Magic show, Trip to Toronto, Oshawa Generals Games, Earth Day community clean up – to name a few. It’s all about creating opportunities and memories for students. It’s these special memories that will remain with students for a lifetime.

WHY THE LUNCH BUDDY PROGRAM IS IMPORTANT TO US…

The Michael Baird Team has been a long term supporter of the Lunch Buddy Program. The Program is very close to our hearts.

Having spent 7 years in the Learning and Life Skills Class at Courtice Secondary School, Michael’s first Nephew, Daniel Baird, was Bruce Rutherford’s second ever student in the program. Dan was very excited about graduating. There was just one catch – he didn’t want to go to the prom alone. Luckily for Dan, his Lunch Buddy, Christa – who had graduated earlier and gone away to university – made a special trip back to high school to go to the Prom with Dan. Dan and his family never forgot that night, nor did they forget Christa. One simple act of kindness can mean the world to a family.

Because of her experiences as Lunch Buddy, Christa also volunteered with the Clarington Project (an Adult Day program for people with developmental challenges that is run by volunteers) and decided upon a career in the human services.

Dan and Christa are just 2 examples proving how important this program is and this is why we want to continue to support Bruce and his students at Clarington Central.

Michael Baird and his team have helped raise over $40,000 for the program.

We are privileged that we have an opportunity to show our support to the Lunch Buddies again this year.  To show your support you can reach Michael direct on (905) 242 0419 or by email at mbaird@woodlanddurham.com.

Your help not only makes this day an incredible success but it is so very much appreciated by all involved.
